EL CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

THE ORIGIN OF THE ROAD TO SANTIAGO

It was not until the ninth century that the news broke that the remains of the Apostle lay in the city of Compostela. This fact immediately reached the ears of the monarch Alfonso II, governor of Asturias. He immediately set out on the road from Oviedo to verify with his own eyes the veracity of the data. He, unknowingly and by chance, became the first pilgrim to make the road to Santiago by the route that today is known as the primitive way.

From then on, the road had an important boom, becoming definitively an important pilgrimage route.
However, when the 14th century arrived, the number of pilgrims and the popularity that it had cost so much to gain, suddenly decreased, the economic and political problems of that time had a negative influence. The wars of the following century did not help its popularity either, it was not until 1884 when Pope Leo XIII declared that the remains found were really those of the Apostle and the Jacobean route was named as Universal Patrimony of Humanity. From that moment on, the flow of pilgrims increased enormously and is currently at its peak with the visit of more than 300,000 pilgrims from all over the world.

The Way of St. James today.

Today the pilgrim is no longer what it was, it has nothing to do with King Alfonso II; today the Camino de Santiago can be done by bicycle, on foot or on horseback. You travel with a credential, which you will stamp at least twice a day and once in Santiago you will get the certificate.
The reasons are no longer only religious, there are also pilgrims who make the way for tourism and today it is a great cultural and economic engine.

Be that as it may, the magic in our routes to Santiago exists and the number of pilgrims who visit us year after year attest to this.

CELEBRATIONS IN HONOR OF THE APOSTLE SANTIAGO

The apostle Santiago is the patron saint of Spain and his feast day is July 25. When this day falls on a Sunday it is declared a Holy Year, this happens every 6, 5, 6 and 11 years. The next Holy Year will be in 2021. During this year, full of festivities throughout the Galician community and along all routes to Santiago pilgrims increase considerably, so we recommend booking a place if you plan to do the Camino de Santiago in Xacobeo year.
